Медаль Калдекотта (Caldecott Medal) — почётная медаль Ассоциации американских библиотек (а точнее, ее подразделения Association for Library Service to Children), ежегодно вручаемая в США «самому выдающемуся иллюстрированному детскому произведению».
Медаль Калдекотта впервые была вручена в 1938 году. Свое название получила благодаря известному британскому художнику, автору и иллюстратору 19-го века Рандольфу Калдекотту (Randolph Caldecott). Дизайн медали разработан американским скульптуром Рене Пауль Чембелланом (Rene Paul Chambellan). На лицевой стороне медали изображена сцена с обложки The Diverting History of John Gilpin, проиллюстрированной Рандольфом Калдекоттом поэмы Вильяма Купера (William Cowper), — герой поэмы Джон Гилпин верхом на скачущем коне. На обратной стороне медали фрагмент иллюстрации Калдекотта к сборнику традиционных английских детских стишков и песен «Sing a Song of Sixpence«.
Выдающихся, по мнению комитета, авторов произведений, представленных к медали, но не получивших ее, награждают премией Калдекотта (Caldecott Honor или Caldecott Honor Books).
За многолетнюю историю присуждения Медали Калдекотта шести авторам она присуждалась дважды, и двум — Дэвиду Визнеру и Марсии Браун — трижды.
В США медаль Калдекотта является самой почетной наградой в области детской литературы, наряду с медалью Ньюбери (Newbery Medal).
Критерии для представления к награде
- Книга должна быть опубликована на английском языке в США в течение предшествующего награждению года
- Иллюстрации должны быть оригиналами
- Художник должен быть гражданином или жителем США
- Иллюстрации должны составлять единое целое с текстом, гармонично дополнять сюжет, характер персонажей, настроение произведения в уместном и понятном детям стиле
- Книга должна быть ориентирована на особенности детского понимания и восприятия
- Книга должна быть независимым изданием, не отражающим чьи-либо интересы
